Spider veins are a cosmetic condition marked by red, blue and purple lines resembling spider webs. They are caused by many factors, including minor valve defects, hormones, heredity and injuries. Spider veins after become more prominent with pregnancy and they tend to worsen with age.
Although they can occur throughout the body, spider veins are most prominent in the legs. They are typically only a cosmetic problem, only rarely causing physical symptoms, but in some cases can be indications of vein conditions deeper under the skin. Our vascular specialists may recommend treatment that includes compression stockings, sclerotherapy (injections into surface veins to close them) or laser therapy.
