Inspired by her mother’s recent diagnosis, Lake Washington Vascular’s Medical Assistant, Megan Ryan trekked 60 miles over 3 days September 11-13, 2009. Joined by thousands of others, Megan walked to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
With a $2,300 minimum contribution necessary for the event, Megan set out to reach her donation goal that would grant her access to an experience of a lifetime. Money came in from a long list of supporters; including family, friends, and the doctors and staff of Lake Washington Vascular. Generosity far exceeded her expectations and by Day 1 of the journey, Megan alone had raised $2,937, with her team collectively contributing $10,051.
But thoughts of money and the real world were left behind as she walked from Shoreline, through Edmonds, Lynnwood, Downtown Everett, and on the final day, through Downtown Seattle. Stories were told all around her as fellow walkers shared and remembered their loved ones that drove them to participate. Megan was constantly reminded how lucky she is that her own motivation was one of survival.
Megan’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer about 4 years ago and thankfully, caught early enough that radiation and determination has left her cancer-free since. This brush with tragedy has given Megan a cause and strong will to help others have hope, awareness and relief from the fear that gripped her family 4 years ago. Megan continues on her path to raise consciousness and fund research by helping whenever she can. She plans to participate in another walk on October 4, 2009.
